The filmmakers will be attending and filming the event. Filmed by San Francisco-based filmmakers, Serge Bakalian and Aurora Meneghello, DEFAULT is currently being aired nationally on PBS, Link TV, and has been screened at over 200 campuses and conferences. Washington D.C., DC 20024Event Link: http://www.usstudents.org/our-work/trainings/legcon
Film: Higher education has become essential to the future of our nation as a whole, and to individual Americans who hope to enter or remain in the middle class. As family incomes, available grant aid, and state investments in higher education have failed to keep pace with college costs, students and families have increasingly turned to student loans to help bridge the growing affordability gap.
Default: the Student Loan Documentarychronicles the stories of borrowers from different backgrounds affected by the student lending industry and their struggles to change the system. No matter when their loans were taken, many borrowers find themselves in a paralyzing predicament of repaying two, three or multiple times the original amount borrowed, with no bankruptcy protection, no cap on fees and penalties and no recourse to the law. The consequences are dire, with stories of borrowers in financial and emotional ruin.
National partners include the United States Student Association, Student Labor Action Project, Student Loan Justice, Forgive Student Loan Debt to Stimulate the Economy, Be Social Change, Occupy Student Debt, and Demos. The project is a fiscally-sponsored project of the San Francisco Film Society and a recipient of a FilmHouse residency by the San Francisco Film Commission.   For more information on DEFAULT, please visit: DefaultMovie.com                       Facebook.com/DefaultMovie | Twitter.com/DefaultMovie                                                     ###

Thank you so much to Left Forum for including Occupy Student Debt on the panel this year!
The panel will investigate some of the many ways we are pushing back against the corporate colonization of academic culture. Fighting to raise awareness of the issues through documentaries and art-making will be discussed by the writers and filmmakers on the panel. Working to return professional stature, governance and economic justice to the migrant adjunct faculty within traditional academic institutions will be discussed by members of NFM. Creating new models of higher education - like the free university movement, open sourceware opportunities and peer-to-peer educating - will be examined for its benefits and game-changing possibilities. Proposed panelists: Debra Leigh Scott and Chris LaBree Co-Producer of ‘Junct: The Trashing of Higher Ed. in America, will talk about the ‘Junct project, our goals and intentions in the making of the film. (Confirmed) Nathan Kleinman, The Free University of Philadelphia Working Group, and candidate for U.S. Congress, in Pennsylvania’s 13th District. Kyle McCarthy of Default: The Student Loan Documentary /Occupy Student Debt.
